The village is historic, as it was the ancient capital of Andros. The statue of Mercury, which is now exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Andros, was also found there. It is divided into Ano Paleopolis and Kato Paleopolis. At the highest point of the village there are the unique waterfalls of the Prefecture of Cyclades.
